Will Travel for Vegan Food: A Young Woman’s Solo Van-Dwelling Mission to Break Free, Find Food, and Make Love is not a book of reviews of vegan restaurants. It is the story of author Lajeunesse’s journey to eat at all of the vegan restaurants in the United States. She completed her journey over the course of two years in an old van she named Gerty.
In September 2011 Kristin Lajeunesse set out on a journey that would change her life forever. With the goal of dining at and writing about every single vegan restaurant in the United States, Kristin spent eighteen months living off of donations and out of a renovated sports van, driving up and down the entire country. After 48 states, 500+ restaurants, and 35,000+ miles Kristin shares her uplifting journey filled with risk, laughter, love, and heartbreak.
She tells that one of the most difficult things about the journey turned out to be leaving behind people she met and really connect with.
“I met the most generous and delightful people along my journey and it was often hard to continue on the trip knowing I may never see them (in person) again.”
Despite a shiny new graduate degree, a dream job, and a great relationship, something felt terribly off in Kristin’s life. With the weight of uncertainty riding high, she stumbled upon some reading materials that would inspire a complete upheavel of her current life path.
To the shock of family and friends, Kristin quit her job, ditched almost all of her belongings, and crowd sourced funds, moved into an old van named Gerty, and set out on the road in an effort to eat at and write about every single vegan restaurant in the United States.
Join Kristin for the ultimate foodie-inspired road trip that spanned 2 years, 48 states, 547 establishments (from restaurants and cafes to food trucks and vegan coffeehouses), and more than 39,000 miles; and find out how it led her to unparalleled freedom, love, and amazing self-discovery.
Self-discovery is a huge part of her book, “Will travel for vegan food”. At times, it felt quite a bit like reading a diary: a part from vegan restaurants reviews, there are Kristin’s deep thoughts about self-discovery and introspection, which are very important valuable tools for growing, and can come in different forms. Kristin teaches us that getting out of our comfort zone is often worth the new experiences we encounter and that it’s possible to live the life we dream of with hard work and determination.
“My advice to those who have a crazy dream or passion project that they’ve yet to chase, is this: Start now. Start before you’re ready because the timing will never feel right (at first). If you want something badly enough, you’ll find a way to make it happen. And that’s awesome.”
